WHITE PLAINS, NY, March 15, 2020… Kara Cannon, a product designer living in the greater Portland area, has won the competition to create a new tote bag design for the summer 2013 edition of NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF®). In addition to winning $1,000, Cannon’s “New York SkyLine” design will be featured on thousands of bags, to be distributed to NY NOW participants this August.

“In collaborating with Red Clay on this design product, we were able to tap into a huge network of talented designers,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “The response to this competition, which launched at the winter 2013 market with seven designs vying for top honors, has been phenomenal, and nearly 2,500 votes were tallied in the final round.”

This first-of-its-kind design project began in November 2012, when NY NOW commissioned Red Clay, a collaborative product design studio, to produce a crowd-sourced online design competition for a new tote design. Seven finalists’ designs were showcased at the winter market in New York City, with voting conducted during the show at the Red Clay booth. Post-market, online voting opened to determine which of two top-scoring designs would be selected as the winner.

Cannon graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2010 with a Master’s Degree in Architecture. Her professional experience includes working as a CAD drafter at both the Christiansen Group in Visalia, CA, and Blackwood Associates in Fairmont, WV; and student teaching at the University of Kentucky. She travels extensively with her husband while continuing to explore her love for design. www.karacannon.com
